Our Heritage

On 14th February, 1902, a group of concerned citizens met in the hall of the Bombay Municipal Corporation. They had to decide how to best deploy the Victoria Memorial Fund – an amount of Rs. 253,800, collected through public contributions, to perpetuate the memory of Queen Victoria, Empress of India.

The group decided to use the Fund to set up The Victoria Memorial School for the Blind (VMSB).

The Victoria Memorial School for the Blind (VMSB) is an institution dedicated to the education, training and empowerment of the visually impaired boys. The School offers blind boys a holistic education, a range of vocation-based and stimulating extra-curricular activities, boarding and lodging all free of cost.

Set up in 1902, The Victoria Memorial School for the Blind has been nurtured over the decades by some of India’s most eminent luminaries and is managed today by a board of dedicated and enlightened citizens.

Nurturing children with special needs

The VMS Learning Centre was established in June 1999 in collaboration with the Centre of Special Education, SNDT Women’s University. Children with special needs require focussed, individual attention, in a nurturing environment.
